Getting Rid of Smells in a Manistee Home
Challenge
Shirley and her husband rent out an extra room in their home on Airbnb. They recently noticed a weird, musty smell in that room that they believe is coming from the crawl space since the room sits above it. They do not want to rent out a room that is not in perfect condition so they needed a solution before they were back on the market. She had added a dehumidifier in the crawl space in hopes of getting rid of the smell but it only made the smell less intense. They decided the next option was to encapsulate the crawl space to keep out anything that could be causing the room to stink.
We sent out Justin Rodgers to take a look and create a solution for their smelly situation.
Solution
We discovered that there was moisture in the crawl space as well as some mold which was causing a musty smell in the crawl space. The insulation that was in the ducts also had moisture which was causing the smell in the room above the crawl space. We started the encapsulation process by taking out the fiberglass insulation, installed some spray foam, and used Mold-X to clean up the areas of concern.
We used SilverGlo to keep the home warm since we took out the original insulation. SilverGlo is infused with graphite particles which give it a sparkling grey appearance. The particles in the board reflect heat back into the space to keep out cold and the home warm. They also do not soak up moisture from the air like most insulations preventing mold or from the boards getting ruined.
Mold-X was used to clean the contaminated surfaces to prevent the growth and spread of mold. Keeping the crawl space dry also keeps mold at bay.
The CleanSpace Vapor Barrier is a thick, durable liner that keeps water vapor, pests, and humidity from entering the crawl space. It also has an anti-bacterial additive to prevent mold growth- added protection to make sure the crawl space is clean and the home doesn’t stink.
Lastly, we used the EverLast Crawl Space Door to create an airtight and waterproof seal around the entry of the crawl space. This keeps out humidity, cold air, pests, water, and anything else you would not wat beneath your home.
