Inefficient Basement Window in Saint Joseph
It's common to see this style of basement window, but it presents multiple problems. Firstly, if you want to use your basement as livable space (e.g. a bedroom) it does not meet building code requirements. It is also a notorious source for leaks.
Old Basement Window - Inside View
Note the signs of water damage on the wall and floor below the window. Also imagine trying to boost yourself up and shimmy out of that thing in the event of an emergency. Clearly, this window is not the best option for a basement you're hoping to finish.
Water Damage from Wall Leak in Basement
Just because you can't see daylight doesn't mean there isn't a breach in your basement walls. In this case, the area of water damage inside corresponds with a downspout outside of the house. This means that as water pours out of the downspout, it soaks into the soil and eventually through the basement wall.
Inefficient Sump Pump in Saint Joseph Home
Just because you have a sump pump doesn't mean you have a solution. This pump relies on gravity to bring the water to it, which means that it fails to remove a large portion of water (like the water in the leaking area across the basement).
More Evidence of Water Damage
While the area near the window was the most damaged, multiple spots in the basement showed signs of water problems.

Doesn't this look so much nicer to crawl out of? Note the dark column below the window - this is a Well Duct, which ties the window into the newly installed WaterGuard below floor drain, so any water will flow directly to the new sump pump.
Outside View of Egress Window
We've said it a million times - if you need a basement window, hire a basement company. This window is made for below-grade (i.e. below ground) installation and will prevent leaks.
Side View of Egress Window
The window sits level with the ground to avoid interfering with landscaping and provide an easy exit in the event of an emergency.
