Waterproofing a Basement and Prepping It for Finishing in Kalamazoo MI
Challenge
Water is never a good sign in a basement, especially if the basement is partially finished. It can cause lots of other issues like mold and rot but it could also lead to thousands dollars of ruined finishings.
Huston and his wife are retired and had project ideas for their basement space. They wanted to create a space for an office and working out. The only problem was- they had water intrusion. Part of the basement was already finished but water was coming in behind the wall panels. There was no sump pump so the water that seeped into the area collected near the walls.
They wanted a solution as soon as possible so they could enjoy a clean, dry basement and Steven made the trip to make that happen.
Solution
We started by fixing the water problem where we installed the WaterGuard Below Floor Drain to collect the water that seeps into the area and send it to the sump pump. We also installed the TripleSafe Sump Pump to keep water out of the home and provides 3 levels of protection incase of a home power outage. It has a pump at the bottom of the liner but in case of high water volumes or this pump fails, there is a secondary pump higher up that kicks on to help pump out the water. The battery back up system, set at the highest level, kicks on if the home loses power so the water can still be pumped out and keep the basement from flooding. We also installed the SaniDry XP dehumidifier which can be stored in a closet or corner to not take up usable space. It blows dry air continuously throughout the basement to dry it out and filters the air so you can breathe happy.
Once the water issues were resolved, we started to get the basement ready to be finished so this Kalamazoo couple could finally complete their projects. We installed Basement to Beautiful Insulated Wall Panels to keep the basement warm and prep the walls for the homeowners custom wall paneling. Lastly we installed ThermalDry Basement Floor Tiles which create a thermal break from the concrete floor. These finishing tiles will never crack, shatter, or mold and are very low maintenance since they do not have grout to clean. They interlock for quick installation and are ideal for basements since they can just be picked up and reinstalled if water gets below. They come in different colors so you can find the right choice for your basement design and are a great way to upgrade your space.
