Insulation in Damp Environments
Insulation is one of those things that you don’t notice until it’s a problem. It’s usually content to live in the walls or ceilings and keep your home protected from the elements. But once there’s a problem with your insulation, you’ll know it; skyrocketing energy bills and an uncomfortable home are hallmarks of poor insulation. And a major problem area for insulation is in your basement or crawl space, an area you’re even less likely to notice than the rest of your home.
See, when it comes to insulation, one size does not fit all. The standard fiberglass insulation you’re used to (the pink stuff) may be great in your home, but it’s a bad fit for your basement and can cause a multitude of problems. Why? The same reason behind every other problem in your basement - water.
The fluffy texture of fiberglass insulation causes it to absorb ambient moisture and everything that moisture carries. This leads to two problems: One, the paper backing (aka an organic material) on the insulation allows for mold growth in the damp environment, and two, as the insulation absorbs water, it gets heavier and heavier, and eventually falls down altogether. Much like a treadmill that’s doubling as a clothes rack, insulation on the ground is useless.
The good news is, your options aren’t limited to “bad insulation” and “no insulation.” We offer a range of insulation products for your basement or crawl space that have the added benefit of waterproofing protection. They are also inorganic, which means they won’t grow or harbor mold in damp environments.
