Weird Wednesday: Where There's a Well, There's a Way
For 25 years, Colin Steer had wondered why his floor sagged underneath the corner of his couch. Embarking on a DIY project to replace a few floor joists, he discovered a dip filled in with the foundations of the home. Steer started digging, and after getting about one foot down, he knew he was on to something. Intrigued by what lay beneath his floors, he yearned to continue excavating, but his wife wouldn't allow it. With several children in the home at the time, digging a hole to China wasn't exactly on the agenda.
Mrs. Steer finally gave Colin the OK to continue exploring the hole upon his retirement. He and a friend started removing the debris using a rope, and discovered that the mysterious hole was actually a well. 33 feet in depth, it's connected to a 16th century aqueduct that runs beneath the home.
Steer is still looking into the well's history, and hopes to find out who lived on the land before him, and have the well dated. Since excavating, he hasinstalled lights inside of the well, and a trap door to cover it. His wife isn't exaclty thrilled with the new living room attraction, but Steer takes great pride in the piece of history beneath his couch.
