Weird Wednesday: Wad of Cash Discovered in Suitcase of Cleveland Basement
Sometimes you inherit $23,000 from a relative; sometimes you find it in your basement. A Cleveland couple was lucky enough for this to be true, after finding a wad of money in an old suitcase in their basement from the previous homeowners.
In the process of remodeling their 1940’s house, the homeowners discovered something in the rafters of the basement ceiling—an old green suitcase. They took the suitcase down, and were mystified when they found three wax paper packages sitting on the liner of the suitcase, which was a Cleveland newspaper from 1951. Not expecting there to be anything of value, they were shocked when they tore off the wax paper covering the first package and found a stack of twenty-dollar bills. They then opened the remaining two packages, both containing fifties and hundreds. Some of the bills were pretty rare, and all dated back to 1928-1934.
The couple was ecstatic when they counted all of the money and realized it was much more than anticipated. Although, it wasn’t until they had all of the bills appraised, that they learned the true value. They said they plan to put the money towards their mortgage.
Say, maybe it really does pay to fix up your basement a little…
