Stabilizing a 100-Year Old Barn Wall in Sand Lake Michigan
Challenge
Gloria lived in her home for 39 years. The property had a 100-year-old barn on it and her husband had poured a new driveway for it. He poured the concrete extra thick as he didn't want it to crack but with all that extra weight on top of the soil next to the walls, the soil pressure caused the foundation wall to fail and shear at multiple points in the barn. Once Gloria noticed this, she was worried the barn would collapse, especially when she would be down in Florida for the winter.
Our System Design Specialist, Matt, went out to look at the barn and see what solution would stabilize the walls and give Gloria peace of mind!
Solution
Blade and his crew installed the GeoLock Channel Anchor System to stabilize the barn walls and help return them to their original position. The installation started by boring holes in the yard beyond the barn where the earth anchors go and drilling holes into the foundation. Steel rods connect the earth anchors to the channel anchors through the wall. The channel anchor is mounted to the wall and is cemented into the floor for a sturdy base, it is then tightened into place.
We were able to come up with a permanent solution that would stabilize the walls, and alleviate Gloria's worries, as well as fit into her budget for keeping the barn standing!!
