4 Ways to Improve Your Home in 2019
Whether you recently bought, are looking to sell, or just intend to keep living in your home, there’s always room for improvement. Here are five ways you can improve your home this year that will pay off for years to come.
1. Waterproof your basement
This one is a no-brainer, and honestly, if you’re on our blog, I’m sure you expected it. But the benefits of a dry, clean basement can’t be overstated.
Waterproofing is the first step to adding living space (see #2) and it’s also vital to your health. When water goes unchecked in a basement, mold can grow and affect your family’s health.
2. Finish your basement
While waterproofing will go a long way to increase your home’s comfort and safety, finishing it to add living space will add value, whether you intend to keep living there or want to sell.
Finished living space can make for a great family room, rec room, exercise studio, or even a bedroom if you add an egress window (we can help you with that, too). And if you’re looking to sell, adding that square footage can drive up appeal and your asking price.
3. Insulate your crawl space
Your crawl space might not seem like a big deal - especially if there isn’t a noticeable smell. After all, you never go down there and you can’t really use it for anything, so what’s the point?
Those high energy bills? Are probably due in part to your crawl space. As air leaks out at the joists, your HVAC system will run itself ragged trying to keep up, but you still might not experience that comfort upstairs. So you have cold floors and a high electric bill. By encapsulating and insulating your crawl space, you can mitigate that energy loss and make it a clean, dry space - if not for you, then for your HVAC guy to crawl around in.
4. Stop settling
We mean this figuratively and literally. If your house is settling, you probably already know, even if you don’t think you do. You know it every time you have to hip check a door closed or wrench open a window. You know it when your kid’s race car rolls away, or when you realize that the sloping of the floor means the dog can play fetch by himself.
Not only is structural settlement a safety issue, it’s a game of inches. It’s the time lost and headaches gained with each inconvenience. Stop settling for doors and windows that stick, for a floor that feels off. Stop settling for a house that’s just ok.
