Mold Isn't That Big of an Issue, Right? WRONG

  Moldy Beams

Mold: A nuisance, aesthetically unpleasing, destroyer of basements. When first discovering mold in your basement, some first thoughts might be: “How am I going to get rid of this?” “How do I prevent this from happening in the future?” How much is this going to cost me?” These are all legitimate questions, but some people may not even begin to think about the toll mold can take on their health.

Mold and Lung Infections

A common lung infection that people contract from mold is called Aspergillosis. It should be mentioned that individuals with chronic lung issues and weak immune systems are more susceptible to the serious side effects of Aspergillosis, but that does not mean that a perfectly healthy person cannot acquire its nasty side effects. Like most lung infections, Aspergillosis has many symptoms: wheezing, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and fever, to name a few. Obviously, no one want to get a lung infection, but sometimes you just can’t avoid it. However, in this case, you can. If you already have mold in your basement, we can fix it, and if you don’t have mold yet but feel that you need better systems in place for future mold prevention, we can do that too! All in all, preventing mold from getting in your basement will go a long way in keeping your lungs in tip-top shape.

Mold can cause many symptoms, like coughing

Mold and Respiratory Issues

There are multiple respiratory problems that can be triggered from exposure to mold. Common illnesses like coughing, headaches, and soar throat can be caused by mold, as well as more serious illnesses like pneumonia and bronchitis. Typically, these can be easily treated and out of your system within a few days, BUT since these can all be caused by many different things, it makes it extremely hard to pinpoint mold as the cause for these symptoms, therefore making it difficult to treat, or you could be getting treatment that is completely ineffective. If that’s the case, then these symptoms would only continue to get worse and worse, which would take an obvious toll on your overall health but can also potentially be very dangerous. Just like lung infections, the best way to prevent these respiratory issues is to prevent mold from lurking into your home and get rid of any that’s already there.

Asthma

Another major respiratory health issue caused by mold is asthma. We all know what asthma is and how dangerous it can sometimes be. Mold has the potential to cause asthma and trigger its symptoms in individuals that are already diagnosed with asthma. Chronic cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath are all symtpoms of asthma that can be worsened from inhaling mold spores. Asthma is already bad enough, so don't let mold in your basement or crawl space make it even worse.

The scary part about this is that these lung and respiratory issues can happen to people who don’t even have a mold allergy. For people who already have a mold allergy, the symptoms can become far worse. There are also a number of risk factors that can make someone more likely to develop a mold allergy, such as living in a house that has high levels of humidity and being in a house or building that has been exposed to high levels of moisture. All of this is why mold is a very serious issue and why homeowners cannot afford to put this issue off to the side when first discovering mold; it’s something that should be handled right away by a professional.

How Do I Get Rid of Mold?

DO. NOT. USE. GOOGLE. There are plenty of websites that will tell you different ways on how anyone who’s anyone can get mold out of their basement. However, none of these are long-term solutions. We actually have a recent blog that talks about common mold removal methods that people try and goes into detail on why they don’t work. What’s the point of fixing something as serious as mold if it’s just going to come back anyways? Here at Ayers, we have the proper systems that can get any basement looking fresh and free of any mold, and most importantly, making sure homeowners never have to worry about mold growth again.
