Even When It's Cold? Humidity and Your Basement
With multiple inches of snow expected across our service area today, you might be thinking, “Ah, winter is here, I can stop worrying about humidity.” I can relate - the dehumidifier in my bathroom has finally stopped pulling pints of water out of the air - but unfortunately, it’s not that simple.
The problem is that we tend to equate “cold” and “dry” because it doesn’t rain in the winter, and the furnace tends to dry things out a little. But snow is still water, and it’s still soaking into the ground around your foundation - especially in Michigan, where the temperatures ebb and flow throughout the winter and give the ground brief respites to warm up and thaw.
Allowing the humidity in your basement or crawl space to go unchecked all winter because it doesn’t feel *as* humid or doesn’t smell *as* bad is setting you up for failure when Spring rolls around. When the ground thaws and the water needs somewhere to go, and ends up seeping through your foundation, it will have a head start on trouble-making due to the constant presence all winter. This means wood rot, mildew, and mold attacking the structure of your foundation and, quite frankly, just smelling bad and making your home miserable.
While that moldy, mildew smell is often the first sign that people notice, it’s only one side effect of mold and humidity. Mold spores are microscopic, so by the time you actually see mold you’re actually seeing thousands of colonies of mold camping rent-free in your home.
Our vapor barrier, waterproofing, and dehumidification products will get your basement or crawl space dry, and keep it that way through the winter and when the spring thaw makes everything into soup.
Winter is a great time to get your home’s humidity problems under control. First off, we’re not in the middle of a flood event, which means we’ll be able to get to your home faster with less competition for time and resources. Secondly, it’s less disruptive. Would you rather deal with a home project now, when you’re not leaving the house as much, or in the spring and summer, when you want to be out and about or even leave for a vacation?
