Motivation Monday: Save Money by Encapsulating Your Crawl Space
Ah, the irony of summer. The weather is finally nice enough to go outside and do things (aka spend money) but your energy bills are through the roof (aka no money). You spend relaxing weekends at your cottage up north but it’s too hot to sleep. Despite the air conditioning that you’re spending all of that money on. What gives?
Likely, your crawl space gives. Gives all of the air you’re paying for to the outside elements, that is.
The stack effect explains the air flow in a house, where new air is pulled in to replace air lost in a quest to balance the air pressure inside and outside of the house. So in the winter, heat escapes through the attic and cold air is pulled in from the crawl space to replace it - keeping things cold - and in the winter, cold air escapes through your unsealed crawl space, keeping everything warm.
But there are ways to combat this, and the most effective is crawl space encapsulation.
A crawl space that isn’t encapsulated might as well have a big open window in it; that’s how severe conditioned air loss can be. Heck, some of them have literal windows in the form of the dreaded crawl space vents. But our CleanSpace vapor barrier system, along with SilverGlo insulation panels created specifically to insulate moisture-prone areas, creates an airtight environment. We have multiple insulation forms to ensure that every nook and cranny is covered, and unlike traditional insulation, they aren’t at risk for mold.
Once your crawl space is encapsulated, there’s nowhere for cold air to escape in the summer, which means it stays in your house and your HVAC system gets a break. This all leads to less use and lower energy bills, so you have more money in your pocket (or in your boat’s gas tank).
