The Importance of Hiring a Reputable Contractor
A story out of Illinois today tells a tale as old as time (now the Beauty and the Beast theme is in your head - you’re welcome). Person accepts offer that seems too good to be true - and then it is. I’m highlighting it because I’ve heard of and seen similar things around here, and now that the weather is nice, it’s likely to be more common.
A truck that said simply “Father and Son” pulled into a couple’s driveway, and offered to “seal the basement” for $45. Once the job was done, they demanded $4,500 in cash instead.
Now, there are many problems here.
-
Legitimate businesses do not trawl around neighborhoods soliciting work. They might send out people to put out door hangers or flyers, but you’re not going to see one of our foremen knocking on doors asking to work on your house on the spot.
-
Legitimate businesses use contracts, not verbal quotes that change on a dime.
-
Legitimate businesses are searchable online. Even if they don’t have a Facebook profile or a website, there will be a Yellow Pages ad, a BBB profile, something that confirms they exist. If you can’t find them, don’t use them.
-
What is basement sealing?
Ok, that last one is more of a technicality and it might just be that the details were victim to a game of telephone, but still. What does sealing a basement entail, and how exactly do you do it for $45? Legitimate businesses can’t do...anything...for $45. Maybe send out some mail.
