The owners of this Fountain, MI cottage loved going spending time on the lake in the summer. However, last year when the couple visited the property to open it for the season, they noticed a terrible musty smell. They were frightened when they entered one of the bedrooms and noticed mold on their pillows. Not exactly something you want to cuddle up against at night.
John Conrad, a system design specialist, visited the property to examine the crawl space beneath the home, assess the situation, and explain what exactly was going on down there to the homeowners. What John found was a very damp crawl space that was inevitably the source of the smell—and the mold.
Dirt naturally holds some water, so when it dries, the water vapor is released. It’s also possible that water was entering the space from beneath the footing or through the brick walls. Not only does this vapor create a musty smell, but in an area with a relative humidity around 70%, mold starts to grow. It releases spores that float in the air, and this air moves upstairs.
To keep the moisture out of the crawl space, our team installed CleanSpace. Unlike other thin liners, CleanSpace is 20mil thick, making it durable and long-lasting. Installing CleanSpace, stops the water vapor from accumulating in the space, and since the liner is manufactured with an antimicrobial additive, it prevents mold growth.
This crawl space liner not only enhances the appearance of the crawl space, but by keeping the moisture out, the moldy smell is eliminated and so is the mold.
